What Is AI Bias?

AI bias refers to systematic errors in AI outputs that result in unfair treatment of certain groups of people. These biases can appear in hiring algorithms, facial recognition systems, loan approval models, medical diagnostics, and many other applications where AI plays a decision-making role.

Where Does AI Bias Come From?

Even when protected characteristics like race or gender are excluded from a model, other variables — zip code, educational institution, or browsing history — can act as proxies that reproduce the same disparities.

Real-World Examples of AI Bias

  • Facial recognition: Multiple studies have found that some commercial facial recognition systems perform less accurately on darker-skinned faces, particularly women, compared to lighter-skinned faces.
  • Healthcare algorithms: A widely reported study found that a health system algorithm used in U.S. hospitals systematically underestimated the care needs of Black patients relative to white patients.
  • Recruitment tools: At least one major tech company discontinued an AI recruiting tool after discovering it favored male candidates based on patterns in historical hiring data.

How Can AI Bias Be Addressed?

  1. Diverse and representative training data: Actively audit datasets for gaps in representation and supplement where needed.
  2. Bias audits and testing: Regularly test models for disparate impact across different demographic groups before and after deployment.
  3. Interdisciplinary teams: Include ethicists, social scientists, and domain experts — not just engineers — in AI development.
  4. Transparency and explainability: Build systems that can explain their decisions in human-understandable terms, making it easier to identify where bias enters.
  5. Regulation and accountability: Support policies that require bias testing and redress mechanisms for high-stakes AI applications.
